Blast Mitigating Technologies

Interior and exterior novel blast mitigating technologies being evaluated are intended to protect occupants from underbody threats, capitalizing on their individual properties to create synergistic survivability. Inside, a crushable floating floor system decouples the crew’s feet and legs from the steel hull while absorbing energy. Adjustable stroking seats, five-point restraint systems, and spatial accommodations mitigate head impacts and flail injuries. Outside, double “V” pontoons with integrated stiffeners and rigid structural stiffening technologies complement the monocoque crew cab design. ULV’s hybrid design creates a “clean underbody”, by eliminating traditional components including the driveshaft, transmission, and frame rails, a design feature expected to have a lower imparted impulse during a blast event as well as allowing space for add-on armor kits, should they be required. Gunner Protection

The lightweight gunner protection kit and sling harness is comprised of advanced composites that protect the weapon operator from threats including small arms, blasts and crashes. Close

Suspension

The suspension system is lightweight, intelligent and adjustable with 18 inches of travel and automatic ride height adjustments for stowage. To adapt the vehicle's response to road and terrain variations and driving styles automatically and instantaneously, silicon-based fluids are used to adjust spring stiffness and damping at each wheel independently. This increases roll/pitch control and stability -- and reduces ride harshness -- all without driver intervention. Close

Armor

Lightweight, cutting-edge ballistic protections systems made up of high strength steels and advanced composite materials offer protection without added weight. An optional armor package is available for protection against severe threats. New transparent ceramic armor system on windows also reduces weight and increases visibility. Close

Vehicle Electronics

Electronics integration is a low-weight system with full Internet Protocol control options, improved integration and full electronic suite capabilities. The use of a common integrated user interface for radio, shot detection, video and GPS positioning result in significant space and weight savings. The co-location of the C4ISR components reduces internal temperatures and lessens the threat of secondary projectiles in the event of vehicle penetration. Close

Crew Accommodating Cab

The crew cab provides increased interior space with vehicle electronics (C4ISR) remote mounted and controlled, reducing HVAC workloads. Doors are integrated in a "clam shell" fashion so front and rear doors open away from the B-pillar, creating a protected exit area. Doors also use over-swing straps to set a maximum open position with an insulating foam liner for thermal stability and HVAC requirements for noise reduction. The doors also boast large windows for maximum viewing angles with optional add-on armor packages for larger threat protection. With quick-release/removable components, seven egress points facilitate stowage space and 360° situational awareness through front and rear mounted ultra wide-angle thermal imagers. Close

Hybrid Powertrain

The hybrid powertrain improves mobility and survivability. The system eliminates the need for a driveshaft allowing the underbody geometry to re-route a blast away from occupants. It also provides drive redundancy with two electric drive motors. This technology, coupled with a lightweight diesel engine, provides capabilities including immediate electric launch, stealth drive, silent watch, exportable power generation, high torque at low/near zero speeds, and may improve fuel economy.
